Overtime 37:
Something L.A.

"Something LA" weaves a copywriter intern's summer trying to become a "hip ad guy" with the current time a year later when he's graduated during a recession and must cope with the perceived embarrassment of under-employment. Along the way he writes some catchy headlines, gets to know the moral compromises of advertising, and mingles with a few famous people when he finds his way into a modeling agency party.

R Dean Johnson worked at advertising agencies in Los Angeles, Irvine, Long Beach, and Phoenix before earning an MFA from Arizona State University. He lives in Kentucky with his wife, the writer Julie Hensley, and directs Eastern Kentucky University's Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing Program, the Bluegrass Writers Studio. He is the author of the story collection, Delicate Men (Alternative Book Press, 2014) and the forthcoming novel, Californium (Plume-Penguin Books, 2016).
